Can You Still Earn a Living as a Tradesman?

A lot of people assume that the demand for skilled tradesmen is down. They believe that if you want to make a living in the modern world, you need to spend your days stuck in front of a computer in a comfy office. You don’t. In fact, you still can earn a living as a tradesman. It may be even easier to make a living now than in the past too.

The economy is booming

In the United States, the economy is doing exceedingly well. When the economy is doing well, companies enjoy investing in construction. This creates jobs for skilled tradesmen. In fact, in the midst of an economic boom, it is not uncommon for a tradesman to be in almost constant employment for years. Absolutely no worries about finances. It is just a case of hopping from job to job and collecting that paycheck.

The number of tradesmen is down

Many schools in this country are promoting the idea of entering into higher education. Obviously, there are pros to entering higher education, but it really isn’t for everybody.

This push into higher education has resulted in fewer people taking up apprenticeships in a trade. This means that there are now fewer tradesmen about, and unless something is done soon, the number is going to dwindle rapidly over the years. Of course, the number of people wanting to employ tradesmen hasn’t changed.

The smaller pool of tradesmen has meant that those who are still left in the business are able to command higher prices for their jobs. It is a simple case of supply and demand.

It isn’t just those established in trades that are able to command higher pay either. People entering a trade after completing their apprenticeship are able to command higher pay too. in fact, it isn’t uncommon for a person who has completed an apprenticeship to be commanding a far higher salary than somebody who has freshly graduated with a degree.

As the number of qualified tradesmen is reduced, pay will go up. This means that it is far easier to make a living when working a trade.

The demand for skilled tradesmen will never go down

This is the real clincher for those who are wondering whether you can make a living working a trade. You can. If you are good at what you do, then there is always going to be work available. For example, the demand for roofing contractors in Oakland County, Michigan has done nothing but increase over the past several years.

Obviously, some niche trades will die out. However, there will always be a demand for plumbers, electricians, carpenters, and bricklayers. New construction projects are happening all the time, and older projects will always need to have work carried out. This will never change. If you are good at what you do in one of the ‘main’ trades, then you will never find it difficult to get employment. In fact, as time goes on, you may find that you need to turn away jobs there are so many available.

Summary

Obviously, working as a tradesman is not for everybody. It is intense manual labor. However, for those who are interested in a trade, you can be sure that you will always be able to make a living from it. If you complete an apprenticeship, there will always be work available for you. This is unlikely to change.
